Note: The Remington 700 Rifles with 8-40 thread are usually found on more military grade rifles.

The front and back PICATINNY bases are an alternative to a full picatinny rail, reducing weight and creating a space between where the rings and bases attach to to the rifle. This allows for large scope mid-sections and allows your scope to sit lower and to get a closer fit to the barrel. The ideal scope position is as close to the barrel as possible.

Usually individual bases are Weaver specification which are traditionally 4.57mm wide, these bases are for Picatinny profile 5.23mm wide and will fit both Picatinny and Weaver profile rings rails. Picatinny profile is wider than Weaver, therefore picatinny rings will only fit onto picatinny rails and weaver rings (narrower) will fit onto both picatinny and weaver rails.
